One important facet of that response is reminding students of the university’s Medical Amnesty and Good Samaritan procedures, which can protect students from formal disci- plinary action if they call 911.
Too often, students
do not call 911 dur-
ing an emergency
because they fear
doing so will result
in an underage drinking ticket or other punishment for themselves or the per- son who needs help.
The university’s procedure ensures that first-responders’ efforts will be focused
on getting help to those in need rather than punishing the caller or the per- son experiencing the emergency. More information on that procedure is avail- able at conflictresolution.illinois.edu/ goodsamaritan.asp.

Volunteers are essential to the success of many of the annual pro- grams and events the Parent and Family Programs Office (PFPO) is involved with. Volunteering is a fun way to show support and also provides an excuse for parents and family members to come
to campus and visit their students. Throughout the year, PFPO sends out calls for volunteers to assist with Moms and Dads Weekend events, Admitted Students Day programs, Summer Regis- tration information fairs and more.
For those parents and family members concerned that they might not know
enough about the university to volun- teer, there is no need to worry. It is by no means necessary to be an Illinois ex- pert to volunteer. Oftentimes potential and future parents and family members want to hear about the experiences of current families. Each volunteer can make a difference and can be helpful
to new Illinois parents and families by simply sharing their own university experience.
The PFPO is currently looking for volunteers for the upcoming Admitted Students Days. This program is de- signed for students and families admit- ted to the university who have not quite made the decision to attend. Before the program begins, students and families attend an information fair where the PFPO has a table. This is the perfect opportunity for our current families to interact and answer questions of future
