Ballesteros Wins Scholarship Raffle
Every year, the Moms and Dads Associations coordinate a scholarship draw- ing. This past year, in order to allow more people the opportunity to win, the boards changed the drawing to a 50/50 raffle. Rather than a first and second prize, one winner was selected to receive 50% of the net proceeds of the raffle. That winner was Juana Ballesteros, who learned on Sunday, November 15, 2015 that she would be receiving $6,023.65
Juana was in the kitchen when she received the phone call from the Moms Association. “I literally needed to sit down. I started to get teary-eyed be- cause it could not have come at a better time.”
Juana’s decision to purchase a ticket for the raffle was an easy one. Her daughter, Priscilla Monsivais, is a junior studying Political Science and Sociol- ogy. Priscilla receives funding from the MAP Grant, but according to Juana, it is not enough to bridge the “huge gap to finance the rest of her education. This could not come at a better time.”
While the raffle winner can spend their winnings however they wish, Juana says she will be using it to offset the costs of Priscilla’s education. As Juana states, “College is an investment, not an expense. This will help with her graduate school.”
Priscilla was as excited as her mother when she learned the news. After re- ceiving a text from Juana, Priscilla called her mom. “She kept saying, ‘I can’t believe it,’ over and over again. We’re both so very, very grateful.”
Individuals can enter the drawing by purchasing tickets. Those tickets usually go on sale during the month of April during Moms Weekend.
