Marching Illini Preparing for Macy’s Parade
Nickolas Maleski
Communications Specialist, College of Fine and Applied Arts
Ask any member of the March- ing Illini, the official marching band of the University of Illinois
at Urbana-Champaign, and they will tell you that marching out onto the football field on game day is a thrill unlike any other. Hundreds of band members move with you across the field, playing music that fuels the
out of the tunnel. That adrenaline rush is something that I will never forget.”
Being part of the Marching Illini means more than the performances, games, crowds, and even the music. “It’s about tradition, it’s about fam- ily, and it’s about unbreakable ties.” Clark went on to say. “The Marching Illini creates a big family. Not only with the people who were in the band with you while you played, but with the generations of Illini before you and after you.”

roar of the crowd. Mark Clark, a former Marching Illini trombone player, 1981 U of I graduate, Mar- keting major, and former president of the Band Alumni Association, still remembers these moments.
“The first time marching out onto the field is a feeling unlike any oth- er,” Clark recalls. “You practice for weeks before the first home game, but nothing prepares you for thou- sands of fans cheering as you march
Sophomore Business student Em- ily Tuttle, a trombone player from Bloomington, IL, feels this notion of family as well. She stated, “My section is my family. We tease each other, love each other, and some- times even bicker like a family. I love the people that I have gotten to know as we overcome anything that the weather, the music, or the drill throws at us.”
