If your student is leaving their cam- pus residence for an extended period of time, they should do the following:
- Take valuables
with you. Campus
houses and apart-
ments become a
target for criminals
during school breaks when they may be left unattended for long periods of time.
- Lock all your doors and windows. Burglary often is a crime of oppor- tunity. If a burglar finds an unlocked door or window, that person is more likely to target the unsecured resi- dence.
- Consider putting lights on a timer. Burglars study residences to see if the lights are always on or off. If the lights go on and off throughout the day, it looks like someone is home and the burglar is less likely to target that residence.
- Ask a trusted neighbor to collect your mail. An overflowing mailbox is a clue to burglars that no one is
home.
If your student is staying on campus, it is a good idea to:
- Avoid walking alone at night and use well-traveled, well-lit routes. Criminals target people who are alone or in poorly-lit areas. Remem- ber the shortest route may not be the safest. If you don’t have anyone to walk with, call SafeWalks. The walking escort service continues to operate during school breaks.
- Check the bus schedule. The Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District limits its campus routes dur- ing school breaks.
- If something doesn’t feel right, it probably isn’t. Do not hesitate to call the police if you feel uncomfortable or need assistance. The police are
happy to help, and they continue to be available 24 hours a day through the holidays.
The University of Illinois Police De- partment wishes our students, staff, faculty and their families a safe and happy holi- day season.
