A native of Dawson, Georgia, Jones earned a bachelor’s degree in agronomy from Fort Valley State College, a master’s of science degree in crop physiology from the University of Georgia, and a doctorate in crop physi- ology from the University of Missouri, Columbia. After earning his Ph.D.,
he joined the University of Minnesota faculty as a professor of agronomy and plant genetics. He is an internationally recognized authority on plant physiology and has published numerous scienti c papers, manuscripts and abstracts. His research focused on the role of cytoki- nins in stabilizing grain yields of maize against environmental stresses and global climate change. During his career, he has trained many students who have gone
on to leading careers in higher education and the private and not-for-pro t sectors.
In addition to serving as Chancellor of the Champaign -Urbana University, Jones will serve as Vice President of the University of Illinois System, which also has universities in Chicago and Spring- eld. Jones is the rst African-American scholar appointed as Urbana chancellor since the o ce was created in 1967. Jones said his rst 100 days would be spent meeting and hearing from deans, faculty, students, administrative leadership, alum- ni, donors and the Champaign-Urbana community, as well as visiting university
assets, including Extension o ces and experiment stations.
Jones said he was drawn to the oppor- tunity by the university’s reputation as
“a world-class, premier institution” for academics, research and innovation, and by his 40-year embrace of the mission of land-grant universities and the academic strength of the Big Ten universities. “ is is my dream job,” he said.
