Welcome from UIPD
Patrick Wade – Communications Specialist, University of Illinois Police Department
e Uni- versity of Illinois Police De- partment (UIPD) is continually evolving
to meet the public safety needs of the campus community, and the Fall 2016 semester is no exception.
Reducing crime in the campus com- munity will always be a focal point
of the department, even as reports of violent crime on campus in some key areas have decreased in recent years. O cers have also made extra strides to connect with students, as cooperation and everyone’s active participation in promoting a safe environment is one of the best ways to continue to drive those numbers down.
“A network of more than 1,400 cam- pus security cameras continues to grow, and U. of I. Police are reinforced every
day by patrol o cers from neighboring police departments to make campus and its immediate surroundings one
of the most highly-patrolled areas in the region,” said U. of I. Police Chief Je Christensen. “But students’ active participation in taking steps to ensure their own and others’ safety will always be the most e ective tool in curtailing crime. It has to be a team e ort.”
Entering the 2016 school year, pub-
lic safety o cials know that sexual assault prevention and response will remain a focal point for the university, as it is for schools across the nation. National surveys estimate that one in ve women and one in 16 men will experience sexual assault or attempted sexual assault during their undergradu- ate college years.
e University of Illinois at Urbana- Champaign provides a spectrum of sexual violence resources, and in 2015 launched its “At Illinois, We Care” campaign to let sexual assault survivors know that there is a community ready to support and assist them whenever they decide they are ready. at e ort continues to evolve to meet the chang- ing needs of the campus community.
e UIPD also formalized its special victims unit, a group of specially- trained detectives who have expertise in investigating reports of sexual assault while using empathetic and compassionate interview techniques so as to not force a survivor to relive the trauma of sexual violence.
Still, student-driven e orts may be
the most e ective way to change the culture of silence that allows sexual violence to persist on college campuses everywhere. e “It’s On Us” cam- paign over the past couple of years has reinforced the idea that everyone has
a part in ending sexual violence and that bystanders must intervene if they suspect someone is in trouble.
Separately, the UIPD has launched its “Adopt-A-Cop” program, where o - cers are paired with cultural and other groups on campus to build authentic, working relationships aimed to create a mutual understanding between police o cers and the communities they serve.
e department paired o cers with the Bruce D. Nesbitt African-Ameri- can Cultural Center, the Asian-Amer- ican Cultural Center, La Casa, LGBT Resources, Native American House, Women’s Resources Center and Cen- ter for Wounded Veterans in Higher Education.
“By getting our o cers to those cultural houses, we’re hoping they’ll form those bonds and relationships so people can ask questions,” said Lt. Joan Fiesta. “ ere’s great value in this for both the students and the o cers who get to develop those relationships.”
e UIPD provides a wide range
of public safety resources, including traditional police services as well as programming uniquely-tailored to a college campus. For more information on everything the department pro- vides, please visit police.illinois.edu or follow UIPD on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
