ACCOMPLISHMENTS & HIGHLIGHTS
The Illini Union had many achievements and milestones that stood out during the 2014 - 2015 academic year.
We take pride in everything we do, and here are some memorable successes.
ORANGE IS THE NEW BLACK
IUB co-sponsored the Illini Union’s One Book, One Campus program in the spring of 2014.
FOSTER COLLABORATION, DISCOVERY AND INNOVATION
• Spring Jam 2015 hosted rapper B.o.B. and electropop duo Timeflies on Sunday, April 26, 2015. The Illini Union Board (IUB) worked in collaboration with the Illini Union, State Farm Center, and Starcourse to make the event a success, attracting over 5,000 students.
• IUB hosted 130 events during 2014-15, drawing over 35,500 participants. In addition, IUB co-sponsored 45 programs during the course of the year.
• IUB expanded last year’s popular First Friday Films series by screening popular block- buster movies every Friday night at the Union. Attendance was over 8,000 and the program will expand to every Friday and Saturday night beginning August 2015.
• IUB’s Spring Lecture Series included Marvel Comics Creative Director Bill Rosemann, YouTube personality Jenna Marbles, and the Last Lecture featuring UIUC professor
Dr. Mark Wolters.
• IUB co-sponsored the Illini Union’s One Book, One Campus program this year present- ing Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women’s Prison author Piper Kerman. This event attracted a standing room only crowd, and a for the first time, a live feed was broadcasted to the crowd viewing from the Courtyard Café.
• The Courtyard Café held over 87 different programs (excluding noontime performers) attracting over 3,700 people. Each of these events was co-sponsored with at least one RSO and/or academic unit.
• The Registered Organizations Office introduced a series of workshops designed to educate Registered Student Organizations about policy and processes they are expected to adhere to.
• The Illini Union Quad Shop formed a retail relationship with U of I Dining Services to provide customers with Good-To-Go food selections such as fresh salads, sandwiches, sushi, and kosher products.
• The Illini Union partnered with International Student and Scholar Services to provide
a campus drop-off location for international students arriving by bus service from O’Hare International Airport. Other partners included University Housing and Campus Recreation. The Illini Union hosted a welcome center in the North Lounge where students could access computers, enjoy snacks and refreshments, and find information about hotels, taxis, and more. The program will be repeated with improvements in Fall 2015.
GUITAR CLUB
The Illini Union Courtyard Café hosted more than 87 programs throughout the year, among which featured performances by the U of I Guitar Club.
