Getting a Head Start on Your Job Search
Tori Spring
Assistant Director of Experiential Learning The Career Center
Want to land your dream job after graduation? If so, you should already be preparing. You might be thinking, “But I’m only a freshman/sophomore, so I have plenty of time.” The most important piece of advice students need to know is NOT to wait until junior or senior year to start preparing for your job search. Start laying the foundation now for a successful future job search.
Here’s how to start this spring and summer:
• Go to the Illini Career and Internship Fair on Wednesday March 9
Last year, over
150 employers
were on campus
hiring students at
the All Campus
Career Fair. Check out I-Link now for a list of the companies that are coming. Who on that list would you like to work for? ASC Communications might appeal to your interest in writing, or perhaps you loved your study abroad experience and Entertainment Cruises sounds like a great fit. Even if you are not ready to look for a professional opportunity, fairs are a great place to help you practice your personal pitch, put you at ease with recruiters and help
you network with professionals in many different fields.
• Evaluate where you are now and where you want to go
Start asking yourself some important questions: What experiences have I had? What are my interests, skills and values? What kind of job or career
am I hoping to find? If you find these questions difficult to answer, then take time this spring semester and during the summer to do some self-exploration. The Career Center has wonderful
resources to help.
• Start to think like a recruiter Pretend you are a recruiter: What would
you look for in a candidate? Often
students think that a good GPA is most important, but remember that a major and GPA only take up a couple of lines on a resume. What else have you done? Recruiters do not have the time to guess what your experiences have been and why they are important. Within 30
